The four names at a glance
| Boat / service | What it does | Useful when you want… |
|---|---|---|
| Vaporetto | Scheduled public waterbus with stops | A journey on the ACTV public network |
| Water taxi | Private motorboat transfer | A transfer arranged for your destination and group |
| Gondola | Traditional rowing boat, commonly booked for a ride | A gondola experience |
| Traghetto da parada | A gondola crossing of the Grand Canal | To reach the opposite bank at an operating crossing |
These are different services. Do not assume a public transport pass pays for a private ride. Agree the service and its price with the operator before boarding.
Choose a vaporetto for the public network
Vaporetti work like buses on water: you board at a stop and travel on a published route. Venezia Unica’s public transport page links the ACTV network, route maps and timetables. Use those tools to check whether a journey suits your start and destination.
The nearest stop may have several boarding points. Record the full stop name and the direction on your route, then match them to the signs where you are standing. Allow time to read the display and validate your ticket.
Choose a water taxi for an arranged transfer
A water taxi is a separate service from the public waterbus. Check the destination landing point and total fare directly with the provider. For a group or a luggage-heavy journey, compare the full quote with public transport for everyone travelling.
Ask whether the boat can actually reach your accommodation’s landing. A place name on a map does not establish door-to-door access or step-free arrival.
Choose a gondola for the ride itself
A private gondola ride and a short gondola ferry crossing serve different purposes. A traghetto da parada takes passengers across the Grand Canal at designated crossings. The City of Venice lists gondola and traghetto services separately from water taxis.
The word traghetto is also used more broadly for a ferry. Read the full service name. An ACTV ticket labelled “traghetto” and a gondola crossing are not automatically the same product.
What about the airport boat?
Venezia Unica identifies Alilaguna as a separate scheduled water transport operator serving Marco Polo Airport and lagoon destinations. Ordinary ACTV urban tickets exclude Alilaguna. Check the correct operator’s route and ticket before choosing an airport connection.
Before paying, ask four things
Who operates the service? Where do we board and get off? What does the ticket cover? Is the quoted price for one person or the whole group?
